This post may be a rehash of existing info, but if not, heres some of the
details of updates of the new LEGO Digital Designer version 1.3 that has
recently been released:
Support for the LEGO Factory (http://www.legofactory.com) palette of bricks
Support for the LEGO BrickMaster (http://www.legobrickmaster.com) palette of
bricks
Brick accounting (make sure that you model keeps within a specific
assortment).
Interactive camera controls (hold the ALT key while click-dragging the mouse).
Remove UI controls to get more building real estate (press the TAB key).
Build upside down.
The base plate is replaced by a sticky grid.
Introducing Intelligent LEGO Connections (place pieces even though theyre not
near a valid connection, good for vehicles etc.)
Keyboard short-cuts for everything (see the manual for details).
Convert a model from one brick palette to another (right-click in the
Restart/Open model dialogue)
Render in different environments (press F3 in View mode to toggle backdrops).
Building instruction player (press F2 in View mode).
New selection tools: Select same colour, Select same design.
Now always rendering in the same quality/level of detail as the printed LEGO
instructions.

Ive had problems with the shortcuts as well. You can create a new one by
browsing to the C:\Program Files\LEGO Software\LEGO Digital Designer\
folder, right-clicking on designer.exe, and selecting Send To... followed by
Desktop (Create Shortcut)
